The Role of Food Safety & Regulation in Protecting Health as a Human Right

SEMINAR ABSTRACT

Enforcement Investigators and Analysis Officers (EIAO) with USDA/ Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) are trained in surveillance and enforcement to conduct foodborne illness investigations, and other vital functions to protect public health. During the past 2 years, FSIS has removed thousands of pounds of products from commerce because they were adulterated, illegal, or otherwise posed a significant threat to consumers. In the case of a foodborne illness outbreak, FSIS investigators and officers work with epidemiologists from other health partners to trace the path of foodborne illness back through the supply chain and perform emergency preparedness and response activities. Duting the presentation, participants gained an understanding of the regulatory and enforcement methodologies that keep our food supply safe.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Mary E. Alvarez, EIAO is attending Bay Path University under the USDA's -FSIS Food Based Science Program and is completing her degree in Business focusing on Leadership and Organizational Skills. Jasmine Hale, EIAO proudly attended HBCU (Historically Black College & University) alumnus from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture-Animal Science in December 2013. She came into Food Safety and Inspection services via the USDA Pathways Internship Program.
